This March, a main topic of conversation has been the challenges faced by idol stars when acting. This spring, more idol stars have been attempting to start acting through dramas than ever. At the head of this group of stars is Super Junior’s Choi Siwon (23).
● SBS Drama “Oh! My Lady”’s first broadcast on the 22nd.
Choi Siwon, a member of idol group Super Junior, which swept the music world with their hit song “Sorry Sorry” last year, has already appeared in such dramas as “Spring Waltz” (2006), “Legend of Hyang Dan” (2007) etc. He finally landed a leading role in the upcoming SBS drama “Oh! My Lady”.
“My first leading role in a drama has brought a lot of pressure and burden. People surrounding the company highly recommended this role, and luckily the atmosphere between the director and actors has been good so I’ve been able to express my true colours and try hard. I feel under more pressure because in this role I’ll be showing a more mature image than in previous dramas.”
There is a good reason why his agency SM Entertainment strongly recommended this role. Choi Siwon is continuing in the tradition of roles like Star in My Heart’s Ahn Jae Wook, Full House’s Jung Ji Hoon (Rain), and Shooting a Star’s Jo In Sung by acting as Sung Minwoo, an arrogant and prickly top star.
“On the outside, Minwoo seems to have a prickly, short-tempered personality, and is hard to approach, but in reality he’s more pure and easily hurt than anyone else. He is like unmatured wine or an unpolished diamond. He trusts and likes people easily, and becomes obsessed with single things, and in that way he’s very similar to me.”
● Removing the image of an idol and taking on acting
Would be bound by a specific acting style and purposely not refer to other top star’s acting, at first Choi Siwon thought that he was going to act like other actor, but thought like that completely died when he received the script. And modestly said. By his prudent and mature atmosphere that he brings, the image of idol group who seems immature is nowhere to be seen in the location of filming
Since he wanted to show an appropriate look, Choi Siwon lost 8kg for this drama. His chocolate abs have made him a hot topic of conversation. However, for him there is a bigger hurdle than just a severe diet. He has to convincingly act romantically with ahjumma manager Yoon Gaehwa (Chaerim). In real life, Chaerim is 8 years older than him.
“Personally, I think if you truly love someone, age is just a number. If I’m really able to give up anything, even if my parents or friends are against it, I think I’d still have the courage to go through with it. Age difference and Chinese zodiac signs have no relevance.”
When asked if that comment was pandering to fans, or if he was conscious of that, and if it was related to his personal religion, he declined to comment and became serious.
● Live and let live… Wants to take on a challenge of a Musical.
Since debut, Choi Siwon has received training in acting together with Super Junior’s Kim Heechul and Kim Kibum. He doesn’t feel bothered by his juniors 2PM’s Taekyeon and 2AM’s Im Seulong, who have also just debuted in the acting world.
“Personally as a fan, there is no rivalry with close juniors. Even back in 2006, no former idols were acting except for our members. However since then, the boundaries between the two fields has been blurred. It’s been very surprising.”
It’s not easy for an idol star to survive the terrible ups and downs of the entertainment world. Getting out from the shadow of an agency and taking their own path with confidence is difficult. When asked about his plans for life after 30, he answered that Chaerim had called him a “precocious child.”
“I don’t agonize over things, and I try not to be held down by convention. Instead of having a set goal, I prefer to live naturally like flowing water. Later on I’d like to take on a challenge by appearing in a play or musical. I dream of appearing in a musical like ‘The Passion of the Christ.’”
While anticipating his cheerful spring drama, I had a good feeling about this singer-turned-actor with a big smile.
